Can scans provided through Course Reserves be used in the university’s learning management system, or in learning tools integrated with the system?

Instructors should make their own fair use evaluation for their intended uses. Fair use can very often cover the usage of copyrighted materials in Brightspace, Perusall, or other LMS-integrated learning tools; instructors are most familiar with their pedagogical purposes for using the material, and are best-placed to make this evaluation. The Libraries’ Fair Use guide page provides a starting point to learn the four-factor framework for fair use evaluations, and Columbia Libraries’ Fair Use Checklist is a useful tool to guide an evaluation.
