Question: What documentation should I keep for my research?

Answer

We recommend that you document your work with the following files at least:

  • a README file in every folder that describes the files in your folder and explains the naming convention you used, like a table of contents to everything in that folder
  • a codebook that defines specific details of a dataset  -- the variables you used/made, column headers for spreadsheets, participant aliases, or qualitative tags are some examples of facets of a dataset that should be described in a codebook.

If you’re writing code, we also recommend you keep a list of your computational dependencies (e.g. the packages and the versions you used), such as a requirements.txt file or similar.
