Question: What is the difference between Git and Github?

Answer

They are two totally separate tools with separate developers. We just use them together.

Git is one of the most widely used revision control systems in the world. It is a free, open source tool that can be downloaded to your local machine or server and used for logging all changes made to a folder (referred to as a “Git repository” or “repo” for short) over time. It was made in 2005.

GitHub is a commercial hosting platform that has gained lots of popularity in the academic community. It was made in 2008. It adds a web interface and provides search and collaboration features for working with Git repositories.
