Question: What needs to be covered in my data management plan?

Answer

The particular requirements of a DMP will vary among funding agencies, so it is best to always consult the agency's resources for their specific needs. You can also use DMPTool (select institutional login, then use your netID email and password), a wizard-like software that walks you through funders' templates and helps you fill them in.

Most DMPs will ask you to provide some information about:

  • Specific file formats and types of data to be produced.
  • How data will be collected, processed, and analyzed (including the software used).
  • Roles & responsibilities for everyone on your team.
  • Standards you will use to describe your data (metadata).
  • Storage and backup procedures.
  • Long-term archiving and preservation plan.
  • Access policies and provisions for secondary users.
  • Security measures taken to protect data and/or participant confidentiality.
