Q. Can I scan or copy an article from a printed journal in the library and post it on my course page?

You may want to first double-check whether the article is available electronically by searching for it in BobCat's E-journals A-Z tab. If the article is not available electronically, you may post a copy to your course page (NYU Classes/Blackboard etc) for a limited amount of time. If you wish to use the article repeatedly over many semesters, you should seek permission. The library will also place a copy of the article on reserve for your students.

A great resource for questions about copyright and fair use of course materials is the NYU Fair Use Listserv, fairuse@nyu.edu. You can also contact the Scholarly Communications Librarian directly.

Also, check out our Copyright Research Guide (guides.nyu.edu/copyright). It provides helpful tips on determining fair use and using course materials online.

NYU Abu Dhabi: Faculty should contact Beth Daniel Lindsay, access services librarian at beth.lindsay@nyu.edu.

NYU Shanghai: Faculty should contact Shoshannah Turgel, access services librarian at shoshannah.turgel@nyu.edu
