Question: Where can I find ratings for municipal bonds?

Answer

A municipal bond is a security issued by or on behalf of a local authority such as a city or state. S&P, Moody's and Fitch rate municipal bonds.

Go to the Business Library's Company & Financial Information section for links to useful resources including links to the following suggested resources.

Bloomberg: USE STGO for state municipal bond ratings and CTGO for city issued bond ratings.

Please note that Bloomberg is accessible in the Bobst Library.  To use this resource, stop by the 5th floor Research Commons.  Go to the NYU Guide, Bloomberg Guide, which has information on the basics for getting started as well as tips, tricks and shortcuts.

Mergent Bond Reviewer: Offers pricing and a summary information on the issue's covenants and provisions for U.S. corporate and municipal bonds.

Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage: Search for a state in the search box at the top.  In the profile choose Fixed IncomeCredit Rating from the tool bar to the left. Click on S&P Global Ratings and scroll down for various issuances and ratings. Other ratings are available.

You may want to consult the NYU guide to Finance: Stocks and Bonds.

You may also want to consult the following:

The SEC provides a basics guide on municipal bonds with links as to where you can locate a particular bond using EMMA.  EMMA provides key bond data including ratings by Fitch, KBRA, Moody’s and S&P. EMMA is the official depository for municipal documents since 1990.

Fitch Ratings: Go to the U.S. Public Finance sector.
